The REAL blasphemy!

E-mail Print PDF

moses smashes the tabletsHow about overkill for offenses that aren't particularly egregious for the vast majority of humanity? I understand, of course, that some cultural context is necessary for certain taboo behaviors, which may have really been causing serious social disharmony at some point.  But let us not forget that the Babble is being touted as "God's Word," unchanging and to be followed for all eternity...

And the Lord God said...

Capital Punishment Crimes in the Old Testament:

Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Kill Witches

You should not let a sorceress live. (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

Kill Homosexuals

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

Kill Fortunetellers

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

Death for Hitting Dad

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

Death for Cursing Parents

1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

Death for Adultery

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)...

The old testament has harsh draconian laws and rules. The new testament seems to have a lot lighter set of rules. Remember, Jesus stopped a prostitute from being stoned to death. Christian's tend to believe we are no longer under the law of Moses but under the grace of Christ which is a lot more reasonable. Jews and Muslims think they are still under the Mosaic law and are much crueler in their dealings.
  • molecule  - about the witches ...
way back when ... the Greeks rendered the word for witches or sorceresses as "pharmakoi."

A current rendering might be ... "Big Pharma" ... an institutiont that hands out potions ... for the greater detriment of its patients. It's a form of medical sorcery or witchcraft that "pipelines" the patient (weakens its immune system), thereby creating (or pipelining) a future inventory of advanced diseases (called, side effects), and future profits for itself. It exists only for the benefit of itself, and by corruption it propagates its own system of reward, otherwise known as "opiem" (literally, O-P-M), an addictive substance also known as Other Peoples's Money.

This real witch or sorceress of Zionism and blasphemy, Pig Pharma, then turns around and labels any real person, who has actual powers of healing, with the label that it alone deserves, witch or sorceress.

The one has to be exterminated, or the other will too soon find itself exterminated. I guess the process of deciding depends on where one stands in the irony of reality. On the one side, one joins in league with a valley of thieves, liars, murderers, nomads, and usurers, whose only possible goal in life is to mimick, and by doing so, therefore destroy, the entirety of humanity. On the other of this irony, one finds humanity, who seeks to destroy nothing ... but who now clueless and drugged, faces almost certain extinction.

Keep up the good work ... that's a wonderful collection and I LOVE the ending!!!

...And if a woman's husband is fighting & she tries to help by grabbing the badguy's genitals, off with her hand. This had to have happened at least once for it to have been a problem worth legislating.

And if a man gets to "know" one of his animals in the "Biblical" sense, thgey both die, & so on in this vein ad nauseum.

The Old Testament is great entertainment, although not for the whole family due to it's being rated R for extreme graphic violence, rape, incest, sexism, racism, cruelty to animals, & generally awesome barbarity.

Jesus is in full support of the Mosaic laws. Jesus confirmed the relevance of the Mosaic laws in the bible book of Mathew 5:17-18 –

17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them.
    18. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”

  • Jeff Hansen
Oh yeah, fun fact: good Christians that follow the words of Jesus Christ Himself are still bound by these bronze age laws. That is, unless they want to conveniently make Paul (who never knew Jesus) a higher authority than Jesus. And they all do.

    Matthew 5:17 - 20
"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven."

Pretty unambiguous words from the Son of God Himself. Guess we can get a jump on this issue by gathering up some stones & heading to Wal-Mart to straighten out those Sabbath-violating employees. Then come all the remarried folks. More stones. Jesus said that was indeed adultery too (Luke 16:18). Mabe we can just reuse the stones each time. Gotta start somewhere if we want to be called "great in the kingdom of heaven"
  • Peter Veenstra  - just learnt something!
Thanks Jeff for mentioning Luke 16. If you look at Luke 16:9 it says that if we buy friends with money we go to Heaven! Strange, my church never taught me that one? :)
  • Arhata  - Blasphemy
the 'bottom feeders' of religion still cling to their ignorance and, laziness to update themselves with information outside of the 'pope-a-dope' mindset. It's not easy to let go of fears.
  • Peteris  - The old testament: code of laws for political domi
Pretty harsh and unforgiving code, indeed. Code of laws used as a tool for cementing society into organization for domination over other societies, in essence, war. To halt inner conflicts to project agression outwards. The lives and resources of individuals are used as a tool for war against infidels, sinners and others that "are not us". Religious and political fundamentalism, reminiscent in all effects of communists, and ironically, nazis :)
The new testament is a progress over the old testament, without doubt, because it makes punishment abstract and not so fatal, and introduces the idea of forgiveness and equality in the face of God. Of course, the new testament itself is modified and interpreted according to political needs of the time, but the basic idea remains.

I think, the Israeli- arab problems in middle east are at least partly due to this religious fundamentalism, that makes the war go on and on by "giving tooth for tooth" and slaying infidels regardless of the warring side.
  • Jaco  - Permisivness leads to corruption
Those laws were perfect and nobody could fulfilled them, our modern society is plagued with homos, prostitutes, sons that dishonor parents, sexual corruption, corrupted politicians, pedophile priests, infanticide (abortion), etc. these are the fruits of our superior moral.

  • Acharya S
Those laws were "perfect?" Really? According to whom? I think they were hideously evil and barbaric, constantly calling for the deaths of human beings for "offenses" that were frequently minor. So you think a son should be taken out to the gates of the city and stoned to death for disobeying his parents? And all the rest of that violence of Jewish law.

You can have it on another planet where the blood can flow and brutality is the rule of the day - that's what that "perfect" law brings. We see it manifested nicely in Islam - perhaps you need to become a Muslim so you can watch limb amputations and stonings of adulterers and homosexuals, straight out of the Old Testament!
  • aselfishpoet  - laughing so much it hurts
and all these malicious decrees are superceded by 'thou shalt not kill'. can't any one see the irony? there is not a shred of evidence that any of these punishments were ever carried out by any one. the whole thing is a construct designed to test the foolish. if the primary, and, we may assume, most significant law demands that 'thou shalt not kill' it is painfully obvious that the rest are complete non-sequiturs. every time some knuckle dragger brought a charge against some poor individual, or even a whole village, that might result in their death under a hail of stones, the wise would make an immediate plea on behalf of the accused on the basis of the primary law of 'thou shalt not kill', thereby nullifying the knuckle dragger's desire for blood. in reality, this whole system of brutal and ludicrous decrees would ultimately serve to expose the knuckle draggers! and then theycould be taken out of society and be... err... re-educated ;-)
