Consider Constantine's mother bought and brought back artefacts from bibleland. She created a market. Creating artefacts became a cottage industry. A few years ago I read an article on bibleland forgeries which quoted a member of a family which had it as a traditional business. He spoke anonymously. He was quoted as saying his family sent him to Oxford to get a degree in archaeology to improve the family product. He learned all the latest things arkies look for to separate the real from the fake.

Well, you may remember hearing about Constantine the Great's mum searching for 'evidence' for Jesus. She supposedly found pieces of the cross and some nails etc. Of course, some claim to have a type of diaper pin for Jesus while others claim to have the foreskin of Jesus - problem with that one is that so do about a dozen others. Work that one out yourself. it never ends.

King David and Jerusalem- Myth and Reality

I'm reminded of:

Here is a recent example of what's wrong in academia still to this day. We have professional archaeologists publicly saying that other archaeologists are "bending science to prove a Biblical heritage" ... with "generous funding, from religious groups"

Quote:
"Archaeologists have given up many of their best practices in order to answer the continuing demands of mainly political actors," says Raphael Greenberg, an Israeli archaeologist from Tel Aviv University, who has worked in Jerusalem.

Quote:
"says some archaeologists cater to financial donors like Elad, which seeks to establish Biblical roots and develop tourism"

Quote:
"Over time, when you're funded by these people in huge sums, and we're talking millions of dollars, you become part of the machine," argued Greenberg, who has been speaking out for some time over his doubts about archaeology in the holy city.

Quote:
Jerusalem archaeologists feel pressured on all sides.

"I'm being looked at by religious extremists on all sides, the municipality, and the Antiquities Authority. Everybody is pushing his side," says Ronny Reich, an archaeologist from the University of Haifa in northern Israel."

As a student with an interest in Biblical and Mediterranean archaeology, I abhor the antiquities trade. It's one thing to sell a repro to tourists it's quite another to "miraculously" find an artifact of supposed significance only to find out its been fabricated. The only artifacts that should be even considered to be totally reliable should be from an excavation period!

Regarding Helena (Constantine's mother), I consider her to begin the relics trade, another curiosity of Christian history i don't like.
