The Origin of Pagan Idolatry
"There is so strong a resemblance between the characters of Jesus and of Buddha, that it cannot have been purely accidental. But the character of Buddha or Crishna of the great father was already in existence, previous to the alleged time of Christ's appearance upon earth. The character therefore of the heathen divinity cannot have been borrowed from that of Christ. But, if it were not borrowed from that of Christ, the character of Christ must have been borrowed from it."
- Dr. George Stanley Faber page 649
At Wikipedia they only cite this much of that quote:
"There is so strong a resemblance between the characters of Jesus and of Buddha, that it cannot have been purely accidental."
Now, Dr. Faber is simply repeating Count Volney's argument but I post it here to demonstrate that this was part of the academic discussion among scholars throughout the 18th/19th & early part of the 20th century until about world War 2. Today's scholars have no such discussions.
