You know what's funny, my SDA inlaws took off to the Philippines to prepare for the end of the world which they have been expecting every year for several years. Since they've been gone all sorts of bad whether and bullshit has hit the Philippines and they went there to get out of the states thinking that it was all going to hell in a hand basket here. My wife and I have a laugh about it every so often. It sucks to have relatives so idiotic and superstitious. But you can't reason with them at all, they have to run these stupid claims out until they totally fail and it's just time to move on.

Yep, there's probably quite a few folks that do that. I know there are churches that have spent loads of money on under ground bunkers so that they will survive to be able to 'spread god's word' in the new world. People need to see other end timers embarrass themselves. It's going to be good to see these religious end time fears put to rest. I think it's perfect timing for such a show after the whole May 21st rapture and Oct 21st end o the world fiasco that failed miserably.

Quote:
Harold Camping Calls May 21 An 'Invisible Judgment Day,' Says October 21 Is Real End-Of-World Date

"... In a special broadcast Monday night on his radio program "Open Forum" that the rapture he predicted was “an invisible judgment day“ that he has come to understand as a spiritual, rather than physical event.

“We had all of our dates correct,” Camping insisted, clarifying that he now understands that Christ’s May 21 arrival was “a spiritual coming” ushering in the last five months before the final judgment and destruction.

During the 90-minute broadcast, Camping walked listeners through his numerological timeline, insisting that his teaching has not changed and that the world will still end on October 21, 2011.

“It wont be spiritual on October 21st,” Camping said, adding, “the world is going to be destroyed all together, but it will be very quick."

A Brief History of the Apocalypse

Maybe we'll survive 2012 after all? I am not clear that religion will specifically be addressed but, I'm not sure how they could even have such a show and avoid religious end times beliefs. If they omit religion I'll have to contact Nat Geo to complain.

Anyway, tonight is the first show at 9pm. New 'Doomsday Preppers' Show Highlights Extreme Survivalists - "a bonus episode at 10 p.m. following the premiere. The show takes viewers on a shocking tour of modern-day apocalypse paranoia..."

I hope it's well done.

Anybody else get to watch it? I wasn't sure what to expect but, it was fun to watch. No mention of religious end times beliefs but it turned out interesting none the less. I'm glad Nat Geo is doing it because makes people stop to think about being prepared for a natural disaster.

Of course, there are too many people today who just don't have the money to prepare for anything serious in any meaningful way - myself included. If a giant tidal wave comes - I've got a surf board ... I'll ride that wave until I wipe-out, which won't take long.

The Crumbling of America

Description:

"Throughout world history, great civilizations have survived and extended their rule through dependence on great infrastructures. Rome had its roads and aqueducts. The Mayans had their pyramids and palaces. But what happens when society neglects its infrastructure? Right now, the U.S. infrastructure is collapsing and it impacts every single person in this country. In the first half of the 20th century, our bridges, highways, tunnels, dams, levees, ports, water and gas pipelines were built during the greatest age of construction the world had ever seen. But now these steel and concrete achievements are deteriorating. More than 70,000 of our nation's bridges are rated structurally deficient. Massive grid failures have left millions in the dark. 25,000 miles of commercial navigable waterways and locks have exceeded their 50-year design life. Everything from dilapidated levees to pipelines to railroads is past their expiration date."

The Crumbling of America

America is falling apart

Quote:
The Economic Collapse Are You Prepared For The Coming Economic Collapse And The Next Great Depression?

Just consider the following facts about America's infrastructure from the Pew Research Center website.....

*According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 25 percent of America's nearly 600,000 bridges need significant repairs or are burdened with more traffic than they were designed to carry.

*According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately a third of America's major roadways are in substandard condition - a significant factor in a third of the more than 43,000 traffic fatalities in the United States each year.

*The Texas Transportation Institute estimates that traffic jams caused by insufficient infrastructure waste 4 billion hours of commuters' time and nearly 3 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

*The Association of State Dam Safety Officials has found that the number of dams in the United States that could fail has grown 134% since 1999 to 3,346, and more than 1,300 of those are considered "high-hazard" - meaning that their collapse would threaten lives.

*More than a third of all dam failures or near failures since 1874 have happened in just the last decade.

*According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, aging sewer systems spill an estimated 1.26 trillion gallons of untreated sewage every single year, resulting in an estimated 50.6 billion dollars in cleanup costs.

The following are some additional facts from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce....

*A decaying transportation system costs our economy more than $78 billion annually in lost time and fuel.

*The United States must invest $225 billion per year over the next 50 years to maintain and adequately enhance our surface transportation systems. Currently, we're spending less than 40% of this amount.

*U.S. transit systems earned a D+ rating from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Transit funding is declining even as transit use increases faster than any other mode of transportation - up 21% between 1993 and 2002.

*Costs attributed to airline delays - due in large part to congestion and an antiquated air traffic control system - are expected to triple to $30 billion from 2000 to 2015.

*By 2020, every major U.S. container port is projected to be handling at least double the volume it was designed to handle.

*Throughout the United States, railroads are projected to need nearly $200 billion in investment over the next 20 years to accommodate freight increases.

America's aging infrastructure cannot handle the number of people that we have now. With the population of the United States expected to hit 420 million by 2050, there are serious questions about how the national infrastructure is going to hold up under such a strain.

Already the infrastructure in many areas of the United States is beginning to resemble that of a third world nation......

Researchers predict ‘global economic collapse’ by 2030

Next Great Depression? MIT researchers predict ‘global economic collapse’ by 2030

"A new study from researchers at Jay W. Forrester's institute at MIT says that the world could suffer from "global economic collapse" and "precipitous population decline" if people continue to consume the world's resources at the current pace.

Smithsonian Magazine writes that Australian physicist Graham Turner says "the world is on track for disaster" and that current evidence coincides with a famous, and in some quarters, infamous, academic report from 1972 entitled, "The Limits to Growth."

Produced for a group called The Club of Rome, the study's researchers created a computing model to forecast different scenarios based on the current models of population growth and global resource consumption. The study also took into account different levels of agricultural productivity, birth control and environmental protection efforts. Twelve million copies of the report were produced and distributed in 37 different languages.

Most of the computer scenarios found population and economic growth continuing at a steady rate until about 2030. But without "drastic measures for environmental protection," the scenarios predict the likelihood of a population and economic crash.

However, the study said "unlimited economic growth" is still possible if world governments enact policies and invest in green technologies that help limit the expansion of our ecological footprint.

The Smithsonian notes that several experts strongly objected to "The Limit of Growth's" findings, including the late Yale economist Henry Wallich, who for 12 years served as a governor of the Federal Research Board and was its chief international economics expert. At the time, Wallich said attempting to regulate economic growth would be equal to "consigning billions to permanent poverty."

Turner says that perhaps the most startling find from the study is that the results of the computer scenarios were nearly identical to those predicted in similar computer scenarios used as the basis for "The Limits to Growth."

"There is a very clear warning bell being rung here," Turner said. "We are not on a sustainable trajectory."

9 Ways The World Might End

1. Planet X Sideswipes Earth:

Probability: Non-existent.
Impact: None.

2. Magnetic Pole Reversal:

Probability: Low
Impact: Low

3. Global Pandemic:

Probability: Low
Impact: Low

4. Meteor Strike:

Probability: Low
Impact: Medium to High

5. Nuclear War:

Probability: Medium
Impact: High

"Not nature, but the 'genius of mankind,' has knotted the hangman's noose with which it can execute itself at any moment," Carl Jung once wrote, referring to the atom bomb. To a degree that generations before 1945 could never understand, the nuclear age has made our expectation of apocalypse more universal than ever before, pushing the apocalypse from the realm of religion into the secular mainstream--a visceral shadow that has lingered at the edges of the modern imagination. Our nuclear fears may have receded with the end of the Cold War and Mutually Assured Destruction, but recent studies show even a relatively limited, regional nuclear war (say, between India and Pakistan) would devastate the planet."

6. The Rapture:

Probability: A matter of personal belief
Impact: Thrift stores worldwide go broke due to sudden oversupply of free, used clothing

Perhaps we should have placed the Rapture before nuclear war in this slideshow. Prior to Hiroshima, the focal point of apocalyptic expectation for most Christians was less on Armageddon than on the kingdom on earth that would follow.
The threat of nuclear annihilation, however, shifted the focus of apocalyptic anticipation from the world to come to the moment of its arrival. How could the faithful escape such a horrifying judgment? The Rapture solved the problem of a nuclear end to the world and the redemption of the faithful: believers would escape the destruction that all of creation could not, because Christ would pluck them out of the world in the moment before it was destroyed."

7. Peak Oil:

Probability: High
Impact: Medium

8. Climate Change:

Probability: Did you sweat this past March? We thought so.
Impact: High

Ever since that hot summer day in 1988, when NASA's James Hansen made his way up the steps of the US Capitol back to testify before the US Senate, the threat of climate change has been painted in apocalyptic colors. There isn't an American alive today who couldn't give you a CliffsNotes version of the consequences that Hansen warned the Senate about that day if the growth in CO2 emissions was left unchecked: of oceans rising to engulf our most beloved metropolises, of amber waves of grain scorched into a desert landscape. Yet Hansen's original dire predictions weren't dire enough; many recent studies suggest we are close to reaching the tipping point on irreversible climate change."

9. The Sun Becomes a Red Giant

Probability: Definite
Impact: Super bad
