Solid-State Disk (SSD) Hard Drives (HD). They still have a little work to do and are expensive right now but, costs will come down and performance will continue to increase. The life-span of SSD's is already fantastic over typical hard drives which tend to last only 5 to 7 years compared to SSD's are made to last like 20 years or more at 1,000,000 hours.

"Solid-state storage technology typically provides faster system performance than traditional magnetic media drives (aka hard disk drives or HDDs). In addition, there are no moving parts in SSDs and therefore the risk of mechanical failure is near zero. Solid-state drives also provide improved overall system responsiveness while consuming much less power than a traditional hard disk drive. This translates into a cooler, quieter platform."

Light Peak Optical Cables May Succeed USB

"Intel sees its Light Peak technology for linking devices by optical cable as potentially succeeding USB 3.0, a change that in several years could mean the disappearance of a port used almost universally in gadgets today.

Light Peak Technology vs. USB 3.0

http://techresearch.intel.com/articles/None/1813.htm

http://www.tested.com/news/intels-light ... sb-30/160/

- LPT transfers data at 10 Gbps with ability of 100 Gbps over the next decade

- USB 3.0 only up to 4.8 Gbps (at best)

They claim, depending on the movie length, one could download a Blu-Ray movie in around 30 seconds with LPT.

I figure it may take around 2.5 minutes with USB 3.0 for that same movie since USB 3.0 is not consistent and rarely works at full capacity.

It could be available in desk tops by Christmas 2010, if things are on time. Price will be factor because fiber-optics are not cheap but, they claim to have found ways to reduce costs to make it affordable. I have not seen any estimated costs yet at all though.

So the Bulldozer CPU by AMD was pretty much a flop for the most part.

We will have to wait until next week, April 8th, for the new z77 motherboards to come out for the Intel chipsets. There's been a delay for the new Ivy Bridge CPU's so, they'll be released April 29th. After that, we'll have to give it time for any drivers, bios and bug issues to be worked out, then, give all the reviews a going over. I'd like to see how the new Ivy Bridge CPU's stack up in the CPU list here CPU Benchmarks and here AnandTech Bench.

I've only ever had AMD simply because they're cheaper but, these new z77 motherboards with the new Ivy Bridge has me ready to try Intel for the first time ever. I'm trying to help pick something out for Acharya. Her computer is on its last leg and has been for some time now - she definitely needs a new computer badly, asap. I think I'm going to organize an Ivy Bridge/z77 set-up for her. Then, it will be a matter of coming up with the money.

I was considering setting her up with a z77 UD-5 by Gigabyte or the UD 3. They have their new Ultra Durable 4 Technology, but I'll have to wait for reviews to see if it's all that it's made out to be.

Asrock z77

MSI z77

In the video below, if you want to see the UD 5 skip to 2:30. For the UD 3 skip to 3:40.

"Computex 2012 is ready to kick off in Taipei this week and Gigabyte has released its latest Ultra Durable 5 technology in time for the opening of the show. The new technology features high-current capable components designed to deliver better quality power for improved performance and cooler operation.

Part of the Ultra Durable 5 technology consists of IR3550 PowIRstage ICs from International Rectifier, when combined with Gigabyte's double layer copper PCB and high current Ferrite Core Chokes rated up to 60A, allow the new boards to run up to 60°C cooler when compared to traditional boards.

The IR3550 PowIRstage ICs are a single chip design with peak efficiency up to 95% which translates into cooler operating characteristics. Greater efficiency also means the technology can run cooler and deliver more power - all of which translates into greater overclocking capabilities. Gigabyte will be offering the new Ultra Durable 5 technology on three Intel X79 Express chipset motherboards (models GA-X79S-UP5 WIFI, GA-X79S-UP5 and GA-X79-UP4) as well as three Intel Z77 Express chipset boards (models GA-Z77X-UP7, GA-Z77X-UP5 TH and GA-Z77X-UP4 TH). Gigabyte did not disclose pricing or availability."

The new Gigabyte Z77X-UP5 TH could be sweet if all the claims are for real and not just some sales gimmick. These new boards are suppose to be available by the end of June.
