Hi everyone. I am relatively new to "thinking outside the box" and would appreciate any suggestions. :?

I was born and raised catholic, and for the past 20 years I practiced catholicism devoutly.

Last summer I started to question the Church's authority, which led me to question everything about Catholicism - which led me to question Christianity, which is leading me to question all religion.

I am an avid reader and would like some suggestions on sifting through the many books I need to read - where to start, what to avoid, websites, audio and video links etc.

Thanks for your help,

Margie

Welcome to the party, MO74/Margie!

If you're interested in where to begin regarding Christianity, I'd recommend Acharya's Christ Conspiracy because it gives quite a broad overview and covers most issues. For an example of that here's a free e-book titled The Origins of Christianity and the Quest for the Historical Jesus Christ which is a recently updated e-book/excerpt.

Here's a video from an independent film maker who made his own movie which significantly uses Acharya's work titled, Zeitgeist part 1. It's only about 25 minutes and it's just a brief introduction to Acharya's work in a sense. Here's the thread for that titled, ZEITGEIST Part 1 & The Supportive Evidence.

However, those can seem a bit harsh at first to a newbie. Acharya's book titled Who Was Jesus? Fingerprints of The Christ was written with Christian friends and family in mind so, it's the GENTLE VERSION. Check out the link and you'll find a video description of the book.

For some really serious scholarship into the influence of the Egyptian religion upon later Christianity, I'd very highly recommend Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection. That link also contains a brief video description of the book.

And then there's the 37-page e-book titled, Jesus as the Sun throughout History

"Jesus as the Sun throughout History examines ancient texts, including the Bible and works of the early Church fathers, as well as other writings, art, artifacts and traditions to demonstrate that Jesus has been perceived as the sun, both spiritually and as the actual, physical solar orb, many times over the centuries by numerous people, including religious authorities and common people."

Here's a brief excerpt for Jesus as the Sun throughout History

Thanks so much !!!

I have seen Zeitgeist Part 1 - first saw it several years ago when I was still brainwashed and totally dismissed it as baloney, but now I can see its truth. I must watch it again.

I am so grateful for the ebook links - I have an ereader and am constantly searching for free books in this category to download - if you have any more links I would certainly appreciate them.

Again, thanks for your reply. I look forward to the journey .

Margie

Hey Margie -

Nice to have you here.

You might be interested in my book Who Was Jesus? Fingerprints of The Christ. Although it is a scientific dissection of the gospels and Christian tradition, it's been called "kinder and gentler" by Christian apologists, so it may be the least shocking to the system.

Be sure to check out all the rave reviews there!

Margie,

I also recommend Acharya's "The Gospel According to Acharya S." - its a good overview of the whole revisionist religion issue, with some terrific essays on topics like comparative religions, good and evil, historical precedents for Xtian dogma, etc.

Really, the most important thing is, Think For Yourself! That'll go along way...

Hey Margie, I am new on this forum and relatively new to the whole forum scene. Your humble request, which, in my own humble opinion, is a good place to begin and even to hold onto throughout your journey, reminded me of a quote by Robert Anton Wilson, that you may, or may not, find helpful.

"Don't believe anything. Regard things on a scale of probabilities.
The things that seem most absurd, put under 'Low Probability', and
the things that seem most plausible, you put under 'High Probability'. Never believe anything. Once you believe anything, you stop thinking about it."

I think this is a good quote to keep in mind as you travel through the tempestuous waters of unfettered truth and reason.
