Finally, a film about Hypatia :D

"A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria."

"Agora" with Rachel Weisz as Hypatia

How 'historical' this is, is anyone's guess but it's a 'must see'.

Oh SNAP, this has the potential to be absolutely fantastic!!!
Quote:
The synopsis:

"4th century AD Egypt under the Roman Empire...Violent religious upheaval in the streets of Alexandria spills over into the city's famous Library. Trapped inside its walls, the brilliant astronomer Hypatia and her disciples fight to save the wisdom of the Ancient World... Among them, the two men competing for her heart: the witty, privileged Orestes and Davus, Hypatia's young slave, who is torn between his secret love for her and the freedom he knows can be his if he chooses to join the unstoppable surge of the Christians."

Excellent find!!!

Lets not forget that Hypatia is mentioned in the thread titled, "Pagan Destruction Chronology (314-870 C.E)" where it says:
Quote:
415

In Alexandria, Egypt, the mob urged by the bishop Cyrillus, attacks a few days before the judaeo-christian Pascha (Pesach-Easter) and hacks to pieces the famous and beautiful philosopher Hypatia. Pieces of her body are paraded by the christian mob through the streets of Alexandria, and are finally burned together with her books in a place called Cynaron. On 30th August, new persecutions start against all the Pagan priests of North Africa, who end their lives either crucified or burned alive.

Yeah - we always get the excuse with regard to these atrocities, "They weren't Real Christians(TM)".

So what were the 'real Christians' doing all this time? Off praying somewhere?

Here's a tribute video clip to Hypatia of Alexandria by Yannis Yalamas

Quote:
"Hypatia, the last great philosopher and mathematician of the Hellenistic Age, who was brutally assassinated by a fanatic christian mob in 415 A.D. Her life, her contribution to science and philosophy, her death marked the end of the Greek Philosophy and Science. Officially, after the death of Hypatia, Europe entered the long and dark period of the Middle Ages. "

Me neither - but the trailer makes my blood boil when I see the destruction by Christian fanatics. Watching Hypatia's murder by same will probably set me on a whole new course of pounding that crap out of that deranged cult.

It's incredibly unfortunate what has happened in the past. Yet, even if we look to modern times it seems many societies haven't quite reached the learning curve yet to understanding that information should be free and protected.

We can look to a recent, but still past, example of the Nazi destruction of literature not complementary to the Nazi parties ideologies.

Or something even more recent, yet not official, such as the Australian Government's unfortunate proposal to implement compulsory internet censorship for all Australians - something that wont happen without a fight against it, and you can bet I'll be a part of it.

Controlling access to information, and even more importantly destruction of information, is truly evil.
